How You Can Help

Right now, there are many low-income and elderly homeowners in Gwinnett County living in dire circumstances.

Read how we helped one elderly resident.

I want to tell you about one of the elderly homeowners we recently helped through our “A Brush With Kindness” program. Mrs. Eva is 70 years old and has several medical conditions and no family to help her. She has lived in her home for more than 20 years and sadly, her husband died several years ago. Mrs. Eva now lives completely alone and sometimes feels sad and afraid.

Recently, someone told Mrs. Eva about our new Gwinnett Habitat program that helps elderly homeowners with minor home repairs. She immediately contacted our office for help. When we spoke with Mrs. Eva, she was distraught and concerned that she might lose her home if some of the repairs she needed were not taken care of.

When we met with Mrs. Eva, her water heater was badly damaged and had been leaking water for months. Also, when it rained, the water slid down the window siding, seeping water through the window sills. Mrs. Eva did not know where to turn to for help. She was afraid of being ripped off by a home contractor. She was afraid that she did not have enough money to pay for food, utilities and the medication she needed, and also do a home repair.

Mrs. Eva was in dire need of assistance .  After conducting our free home evaluation, Gwinnett Habitat went into immediate action to help this sweet, little elderly widow and to demonstrate the love of God to her by helping to improve her home's living conditions through our “A Brush with Kindness (ABWK) program.

With the help of volunteers, we replaced her old, damaged water heater with a new, energy efficient water heater, and installed gutters on the outside of her home so that when it rained the water would go through the gutter channels instead. We also made some other minor improvements... You could see the look of gratitude on Mrs. Eva's face when the work was completed.  She felt hopeful and she also felt better. The sun now radiated beautifully through her window. And she made some new friends out of the volunteers too.

This is what the “A Brush with Kindness (ABWK)” program is all about... giving hope, help and kindness to elderly and low-income homeowners who are in great need of minor home or safety repairs.  The “A Brush with Kindness” program eases wary homeowner concerns by providing simple home preservation services that are sensitive and caring to elderly and low-income homeowner circumstances.

At present, there are many low-income and elderly homeowners in Gwinnett County living in similar dire circumstances. These at-risk seniors, many who are living alone also have to make difficult choices regarding paying for food, utilities, medication, and home repairs. Home repairs are usually at the bottom of the list because of their very limited income or due to illnesses that they are dealing with. However, if they don't maintain their homes, they could lose it and their insurance company could also refuse to insure them. The City or County could also cite them with  code violations that cost serious money for lack of maintenance.

But right now with your assistance, together we can make a huge difference in the lives of these elderly homeowners in need of help. Your gift of $25, $50, $500, $1,000 or whatever you can give will have an enormous impact in providing a safer, maintained home so these elderly homeowners can once again live with dignity and a sense of well-being.
