Own A Home

Many families live their whole lives without owning their own home, some may never even live in a home; not for lack of desire to live in a home, but because they can’t afford it.  Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity offers opportunities to own a home. But it’s not a quick fix, and becoming a Habitat homeowner requires commitment, responsibility and deep involvement. Habitat homeowners earn their homes.

In order to partner with us, you must meet the following preliminary criteria:

  1. Must be a Legal Permanent Resident of the United States.
  2. You must have lived or worked in Gwinnett County for at least the last 12 months. Affiliates for other vicinities can be found at
  3. Your yearly income must fall within our income guidelines, which are adjusted for family size (refer to Income Table on the Selection Criteria page). Income includes wages, Social Security, disability, SSI,TANF, and child support.
  4. You must have one year of continuous income.
  5. You must have a reasonably good credit history. It must be at least two years since you discharged any bankruptcies, and you must be making payments on your debts.
  6. You must have a need for housing because your current housing is unaffordable, unsafe, or overcrowded.
  7. You must partner with Gwinnett Habitat and contribute "sweat equity,” helping to build your home as well as other families' homes, and attend a minimum of ten educational workshops.  All families must complete a total of 250 hours.

If you are able to meet these criteria, then the next step would be attending one of our Applicant Orientation meetings.  Here we will explain the full requirements of our program, and you can obtain an application form.
