Becoming a Habitat Homeowner

Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity offers opportunities to own a home. But it’s not a quick fix, and becoming a Habitat homeowner requires commitment, responsibility and deep involvement. Habitat homeowners earn their homes.

In order to partner with us, you must meet the following preliminary criteria:

  1. Must be a first-time homebuyer, or have not owned a home within the past 3 years.
  2. Must be a Legal Permanent Resident of the United States.
  3. You must have lived or worked in one of the following Metro Atlanta counties for at least the last 12 months: Clayton, Cherokee, Dawson, DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette, Forsyth, Gwinnett, or Henry. Affiliates for other vacinities can be found at www.habitat.org.
  4. Your yearly income must fall within our income guidelines, which are adjusted for family size (refer to Income Table on the Selection Criteria page). Income includes wages, Social Security, disability, SSI, food stamps, TANF, and child support.
  5. You must have one year of continuous income.
  6. You must have a reasonably good credit history. It must be at least two years since you discharged any bankruptcies, and you must be making payments on your debts.
  7. You must have a need for housing because your current housing is unaffordable, unsafe, or overcrowded.
  8. You must partner with Gwinnett Habitat and contribute "sweat equity,” helping to build your home as well as other families' homes, and attend a minimum of ten educational workshops. Single-parent families complete 250 hours; two-parent families complete 350 hours.

Funding assistance provided to Gwinnett County Habitat for Humanity, Inc. by the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners, through HOME Investment Partnership Act [HOME] Program funds awarded to Gwinnett County by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
