Becoming a Habitat Homeowner
Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity offers opportunities to own a home. But it’s not a quick fix, and becoming a Habitat homeowner requires commitment, responsibility and deep involvement. Habitat homeowners earn their homes.
In order to partner with us, you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have lived or worked in one of the following metro Atlanta counties for at least the last 12 months: Clayton, Cherokee, Dawson, DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette, Forsyth, Gwinnett, or Henry. Affiliates in other areas can be found at www.habitat.org.
- You must be a legal resident of the United States.
- Your yearly income must fall within our income guidelines, which are adjusted for family size. The range for a family of four would be $17,800-$42,720. Income includes wages, Social Security, disability, SSI, food stamps, TANF, and child support.
- You must have one year of continuous income.
- You must have a reasonably good credit history. It must be at must be at least two years since you discharged any bankruptcies, and you must be making payments on your debts.
- You must have a need for housing because your current housing is unaffordable, unsafe, or overcrowded.
- You must partner with Gwinnett Habitat and contribute "sweat equity,” helping to build your home and other families' homes, and attend a minimum of ten educational workshops. Single-parent families complete 250 hours; two-parent families complete 350 hours.
